I think they might have finally topped Ecdysis for me. Easily my AOTY so far, and it's not even close.

Finally get to hear the whole album. Cult of Shadoo'ah was awesome live and great to hear it again on album. This album isn't really proggy and floats somewhere in between 80s death, thrash and heavy. It's a super fun album. Just mad they weren't selling the New album on vinyl when I saw em a few weeks ago.

Ontological Mysterium is incredible, the bass work on the album is particularity stands out. And as usual the production is absolutely perfect. Gonna be listening to this one a lot!

I seem to remember one of these guys being big on the MxTabs forums in the before time but I could be mistaken.

Such a great band. I love bands that take a certain style, do it really well and then add their own unique elements.

to this day The Chills is still my favorite. <3 Horrendous opened up a whole world of independent bands for me. up until them I was listening mostly to those same old bands.

i can definitely understand calling idol (along with quite a lot of other prog bands/albums, for that matter) wankery, but in what way is opeth wankery? genuine question, i've always thought of them to be much more than that. sure mikael has a lot of technical ability but he seems to me to be able to write with lots of feeling and restraint, with a lot more focus on solid and unique riffs and well-executed dynamics rather than the noodling about that a lot of their contemporaries like dream theater and btbam tend to do. that being said i am genuinely curious and interested to hear you go into more detail as it's a perspective i've never really understood

Possibly the best death metal about today. Ecdysis is still their best but I can't think of many others on their level.

I love this band, but I don't understand what makes them "old school." Is because they're not cavernous? I love cavernous death metal, but surely there must be more to contemporary DM than that. Is it because they sound a little like Atheist or Cynic? Great bands, but they were considered pretty anomalous back in the day. Could it be I'm just getting old and increasingly out of touch? I'm willing to consider the possibility. lol

I think they could really only be considered "old school" in their early stuff, like The Chills. They've since gone down the path of progressive as well as melodic dm.

With The Chills they had become my favorite band from the newer ones that were coming up, but even though I do like Ecdysis I thought it wasn't as satisfying to me as the previous one. I didn't like Anareta at the first listening so I'm still neglecting it, but maybe i'll dig it in the future. I feel a bit sad that I only got really excited with the debut. Now I understand how the old school fans felt when their favorite bands started tripping out.

People who think Horrendous is horrendous should re-evaluate themselves. They should give this band a better chance. Horrendous rocks!
