some of the songs are good, but some are really weird and actually creepy.. I don't like them so much that I even have to skip them, which is something that I don't do very often. that makes it by far the worst Ihsahn's album for me so far

Very enjoyable, however I think it ranks slightly behind Eremita and After for me. I prefer the grooves, time signature work and more guitar driven songwriting. I don't dislike the more atmospheric approach on this album, I jut prefer the approach of the previous two. However this does expand his musical repertoire and furthers the story magnificently. So in that context it is a success for me.

@MATI9630: In fact yes, they are, even if you don't like them, which I can understand and respect, and even if it may not need great composing skills to write a Rammstein or LP song, but yes, it actually is music. Other than e.g. Tacit 2, which sounds basically like a 5 year old kid on a drum set with some free-to-download-sound-noise in the background. @TheNightsnail: I re-listened to it some days later, hoping that my opinion would change. Well, it didn't. I don't find the album horrible, more like mediocre. It's just that I know, that Ihsahn has the ability to create better music, and this was just disappointing. And I agree with everything Szutter says. Especially the point with this album being like modern art. I don't see what's artistic about it. I know, that many people can or want to interpret many things into something like this to give it a meaning and justify liking it, but I just can't, I don't find any emotional or intellectual reason to listen to this album.

I know some albums that "didn't click me after one listen". The difference is, they brought me some joy, and I kinda wanted to get trough this one more time, cause there was that "something" in it, you know? I understand that people like this record, I have nothing against it's fans. You may consider some of my favourites as "bullshit" and I won't mind - it's just a matter of taste ;) Merry Christmas, everybody! And don't get mad at me, I'm just a simple man! :D

Well Das Seelenbrechen is not an easy listening album. You need to concentrate to it. It didn't click me after one listen. I understand if you don't like it. As much as I like Ihsahn's works some parts of this album are really boring and just stream of consciousness. Although it has it's flaw I find this record very interesting because it differs quite much from his other albums.

@TheNightsnail. Tell me, why on Earth should I listen to something that I didn't even slightly enjoy more than once? The music I listen to is a soundtrack of my life, and I don't need fillers in it, so when I don't like the band/album I just discovered, I leave it alone for it's fans. Simple. For me, Das Seelenbrechen is awful and I don't need to check it again, because it's what I like to call "a waste of time". I like the progress in metal music, but there has to be MUSIC in it. I don't want to explore this noise, because even if I found anything valuable in it, the seeking wouldn't bring me any pleasure.

@Kleisterer & Szutter. So, you judge this album after you have listened it once? You must have a very short concentration span.

I agree with @Kleisterer. Pollock, Rothko and other "modern artists" came trough my mind when I was listening to this crap. It works the same way as their "paintings" - compositions of random stains of paint considered as art. Is it really so fucking intellectual to scream with some shitty noise in the background, which reminds of cheesy science-fiction movies from the 70's?

Biggest disappointment of the year... based on what could be expected from an actually talented musician like Ihsahn, this is a single musical catastrophe from the beginning to the end. Not even one enjoyable song. But well, looking at these comments here I guess he has his audience, that will interpret enough deep shit into this terrible output and will wank over 5 minutes of random drum beating combined with some intellectual sound noise background. But to each his own, I will listen to something more close to actual music in the meantime...

Listen it in inverse order starting from "See" or "Hel" and ending it to "Hiber"

What a grower of an album. Incredible experience to listen when it finally clicks in. Nice to see Ihsahn show off his experimental side more. 8/10

The final three songs make you feel like listening something off Devin Townsend's Devlab

What a fantastic record! Intense and oppressively atmospheric. Of all the solo records this one feels and sounds most like Ihsahn's own. You can really dive into his mindscape. Black Metal Dandy did it again!

I'm really enjoying that this album is more experimental than "progressive". Best of Ihsahn I think.

I read a review from someone saying this album was disjointed with no flow or direction. Who fucking cares? It's so good. Such variety and interesting tracks. Every single one has something to offer, and some of the sections on this album are the most tasteful things he has ever composed. Only gonna get better too.
