J.I.D. wanted to make a bold statement for the album’s first song. On this track, he delivers a lot of “Slick Talk” to his fellow rappers, explicitly stating his superiority to them. He warns them that his rise to the top of the rap game is undoubtedly imminent, and he challenges his peers to prove him wrong. Because of the trials and tribulations he has experienced in his life, J.I.D. has no reason to suppress himself or sugarcoat his intentions.

This song perfectly sets the tone for the rest of the album as J.I.D. continues to challenge his competition and showcase his artistic abilities throughout.

In a tweet posted on November 22, 2018, J.I.D. wrote:

“the Level of shit talk I produced on “Slicktalk” is unparalleled“

He previewed a significant portion of the song in an Instagram Live session on July 6, 2018. The first six lines of this song’s third verse are taken directly from J.I.D’s XXL Freshman Freestyle, which was released five months prior to this track. On “Slick Talk,” some of the wording is slightly adjusted.
