Jason McMaster is a heavy metal vocalist from Austin, Texas. He gained fame singing for influential progressive metal band Watchtower from 1982-1987. Watchtower, released Energetic Disassembly,(currently out of print) the debut album that brought them to arguably become the pioneers of progressive technical thrash metal. Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater) , Gene Hoglan ( Dark Angel, Death) , Kelly Schafer ( Athiest) and Chuck Sculdiner ( Death) , have all been quoted, believing this to be true.
Watchtower music can also be found on the sophomore record, CONTROL AND RESISTANCE on Noise Records( recorded in Berlin, Germany 1989), with line up change consisting of Ron Jarzombek on guitar and Alan Tecchio, a close friend of Jason's who replaced him for this release.
Jason and Watchtower, regroup to play live concerts , most recent in 2023 to play KEEP IT TRUE RISING ,in Wurzburg, Germany. The band is set to also play HELLS HEROES FESTIVAL in Houston, and LEGIONS OF METAL FESTIVAL in Chicago IL., both in 2024. No plans to write or release new material as of now.
In late 1987, he joined the southern sleaze rock act Dangerous Toys, who achieved moderate success. Dangerous Toys, their self-titled debut in 1989, spawned the hits Scared and Teas'N Pleas'N , helping the record go gold and receiving airplay on rock radio and MTV. They would go on to release three more studio albums (giving them an additional gold record) and one live album. Slowly writing new material, with no label pressure or deadline, Dangerous Toys regroups for live performances. The band has also become a staple act for the Monsters of Rock cruise, as well as the Mountain Music Festival in Gatlinburg ,Tennessee.
He and Dangerous Toys will play these shows as well as spotted markets throughout the USA,in 2024, as well as a few shows in support of one of Jason's favorite bands, Armored Saint.
side note- in November 2022, Jason was asked to fill in for Armored Saint singer John Bush, when John fell ill to upper respiratory problems. The shows he filled in on were up the eastern seaboard, New York, New Jersey, Boston, and Pennsylvania.
This rare opportunity to help out his friends, happened again when German metal band , ACCEPT, also asked Jason to fill in for ACCEPT singer Mark Tornillo. strangely for the same reason. The shows were around the same area of eastern USA in October 2022.
In 1999, McMaster and Dangerous Toys guitarist Paul Lidel formed Broken Teeth, an Austin-based hard rock band (Lidel parted ways in 2006). Broken Teeth toured consistently from 2006 til 2012, and has released nine albums, two of those releases being the critically well-received Viva La Rock, Fantastico! in January 2010. and Broken Teeth- Four on the Floor (2017). Both are still available on the bands website and all media platforms. The band conitues to play live periodically, and is currently writing new material.
2008, Jason joined Austin TX based power metal act, IGNITOR. Fronting the band for many years now, the band has released five full length records, all still available. The music is classic, traditional power metal with influences from old thrash metal such as Destruction and Metallica, to melodic metal of Dio and Mercyful Fate. The band stays slcoe to home, playing shows around Texas, and continues to write and release great fun heavy metal records.
In 2011, Jason joined the thrash metal act Evil United, which also features members of Pitbull Daycare, SA Slayer, Riot, and Murderdolls. Releasing three full length records. All still available. The band no longer plays live, and no plans to record new material, never released statements of disband. Now defunct.
2018 Jason joined forces with Italian multi instrumentalist, Davide Tiso, to record two over the top progressive, brooding avante garde releases on Prosthetic Records . the self titled debut, HOWLING SYCAMORE and in 2019, SEVEN PATHWAYS TO ANNIHLATION. the records were very well received in the progressive metal world, with 10/10 reviews and with the high hopes that the band would play live. To this day, Jason and Davide have never met face to face, making the releases a mysterious and sought after. Both records now out of print. Davide and Jason have spoken briefly about working together, post covid, but have yet to make plans for new material.
