“not ur friend” is the second promotional single from Jeremy’s debut album, love is not dying. In the song, Jeremy sings about letting go of a toxic person and moving on with his life. He expressed this in a press release with The Prelude Press:

It’s really just a fun, matter of fact song about cutting a toxic person out of your life.

The song was first teased through Jeremy’s Instagram on February 24, 2020, which announced the release date. Two days later, Jeremy posted again with a snippet of the song preparing his followers for the official release.

“This was the only song on the album that I wrote with other writers, Max Martin’s MXM. We worked on a bunch of ideas with that team, and “not ur friend” was the coolest song that came out of those sessions. We were just all cracking up while writing it because the lyrics are just so flippant. This is the antithesis to the type of music that I make, because it’s very much like, “Fuck you, I’m out.” It’s a selfish song, which, in its own way, is a really celebratory thing. I’ve gotten lots of messages from fans saying that this song helped them cut somebody toxic out of their life, and they’re better for it.“ - via Apple Music

““not ur friend” is really a song about refusing to be weighed down by somebody that makes your life difficult, so anyone that’s involved in a toxic friendship or relationship or any sort of uneven relationship or somebody who’s taking too much from you or just not reciprocating the energy that you’re giving them, it’s really just about sort of cutting that person out of your life and not in an aggressive or negative way. It’s more just like the fact that you’re better off without somebody. And it’s about the freedom that comes from making that decision yourself.“ – Jeremy via MYX
