“LEGENDARY” is the first collaboration from Joey and J. Cole as a result of 2016’s "False Prophets" remix. In this song, the two introduce ideas such as spirituality, contentment and inner peace. Additionally, they question the way they, as “legends,” live their life and influence those around them.
Though this is the pair’s first collaboration, Joey stated in a Beats 1 interview that J. Cole was one of his favorite rappers when he was around 15-16 years old (another being Kendrick Lamar). According to the interview, Cole sent his verse in the day before "4 Your Eyez Only" was released.
One thing the listener may notice immediately is how different Cole’s voice sounds as compared to his recent material from "4 Your Eyez Only".
In the summer of 2016, Cole reached out to Joey for his blessing before releasing “False Prophets,” a song that samples Joey’s 2012 song “Waves.”
In an interview with LA Leakers, Joey explained:
"I already knew off of the strength of that, he was going to come through with the verse. He was telling me for a minute like, “Yo, you’re the only person I got on my feature list. I got you, I’m gonna make it happen, just wait. I gotta finish my album and shit.” He literally sent the shit the day before his album came out."
