My second favourite album of all time. One that never ceases to amaze me every time I play it.

Sometimes I just put this album on and marvel at the fact that a human being created it

Not many people know or appreciate the fact that Joni collaborated with the greatest bass player of all time: Mr. Jaco Pastorius. The albums she recorded with him are pure gems.

Today Pitchfork gave Hejira a perfect 10/10 in their Sunday review and, even though reviews shouldn't matter (and in many ways they don't), it's the biggest marker of justice that Joni and this work have received - one needed for decades now.

hejira is one of the best albums ever written. joni mitchell—a songwriting genius if we ever had one—is on top form. her musicality, her poetry, her sheer brilliance: all of these things come to their climax with hejira. it is the most deftly constructed of her albums, the one that's shot through with the most hope. 'no regrets, coyote,' she sings, tongue in cheek, and indeed the album is formed without regrets. it is incredible in its versatility; applicable to a calming walk on a saturday afternoon, a subway ride in the quiet breeze of morning, a sea of tears in the centre of the night. there is a song on this album for every experience, and a richness of lyrical thinking to make you feel that joni understands. hejira is like coming home.

Joni Mitchell had been moving toward jazz for some time, and on Hejira she took the plunge.

I think I connected with this album the most because it came to me at the perfect time in my life for me to understand it. I was constantly traveling back and forth from my college town to my home town (which was about a 3 hour drive) throughout the winter months. It made perfect sense to me- this restless transient, this prisoner of the white lines of the freeway/refuge of the road (as Joni so poetically put it). The cold and stark atmosphere of this album plus my own personal turmoil at the time made for an unforgettable experience. I will always hold this record close to me.

It's so funny seeing this everyone commenting that they immediately fell in love with this album when this was a grower on me. Versus Don Juan's Reckless Daughter or Hissing of Summer Lawns, which many say are hard to digest, I immediately loved them. This one took me awhile because there's no piano ballads on it and the songs are more focused on lyricism than the music. Song For Sharon and Amelia, at first, sounded like they would neverrrrr end. But now I love them. With Joni's albums, you either love them or you have to listen to them a few times to really *get* it. The latter is what happened with Hejira for me. But it's a great album and it's one of her best!

Great comment. I will second your feelings-- it was by no means love at first listen for me with this record, as opposed to some of her earlier, more traditionally beautiful records like Ladies of the Canyon and Blue, which I loved immediately. This one had to grow on me and, to some extent even after many years, continues to grow on me.

this album to me is the perfect essence of joni. when i think of my favourite songs of her the first ones that come to mind are mostly others but this album as a whole is just so incredible. a great showcase of her really unique sense for melodies and chords combined with that great band.

The lyrics of this album seems to reflect the thoughts of a lone traveler. - Love this album.

I hold this album close to my heart, especially when I listen to it entirely while traveling. Hard not to be transported into this windy, wayworn grey universe of hers.

It really doesn't get better than this. From start to finish, this is a very well done album loaded with some of Joni's best lyrics and guitarwork.
