“God Is” is a soulful explanation of what the Lord is to Kanye and the many forms He and His gifts take in his life, explaining that God has helped free himself from his past demons and open up his life and his future to a new journey of faith.
The track first appeared on the first JESUS IS KING track listing teased by Kim Kardashian on August 29, 2019. When the track didn’t appear on the second track list teaser from Kardashian on September 27, 2019, fans thought it had been cut from the record. However, Kanye previewed a part of the song during his Sunday Service session in Salt Lake City, Utah on October 6, 2019, where the choir performed the speculated chorus.
During the week ending November 9, 2019, “God Is” debuted and peaked at #36 on the Hot 100.
