Oof. This album makes my neck hair's neck hair stand on end. And I mean that in the best way possible.

As with every Kayo Dot album, it can take a while to click but once this one does, it's easily the best thing since CofE.

Also, any thoughts on the bell motif in this album? Three of the songs mention bells, two of them rather emphatically. It can't be a coincidence.

Somewhat reminds me of some of the Rock in Opposition movie. Maybe it's just the free-jazzness of the two, but with somewhat of a metal sensibility.

Without question their most difficult, but also the most "quirky" and extremely rewarding when it finally does click.

The synth bass in particular is an exciting feature of this album, it gives the album a nice, quirky texture throughout.

Have found a brand new appreciation for this album. Why, then, only this very slow growth in appreciation over time? It's because I'd go as far as say that this is the most difficult album of Kayo Dot to get into.

This album is always playing in my head, somewhere in the background, and every now and then a melody comes haunting me out of the shadows, over and over, and then fades again.

I'm glad to see a lot more positive shouts on here. Definitely a very good album, but as iamthepinky said, it's from a completely different/odd angle. Odestoteles also had a good point about the execution of the tension and release...I'm going to have to put myself in isolation within the next few days and seriously study this album. :)

The first and last tracks are gold. I'm still struggling to enjoy the shorter songs on this album, though—except "The Useless Ladder", which is amazing.

this is my favorite. The other albums are pure genius, but this is wonderfully crafted. meaning the next album will be better????.>>>???>>>

WHERE THE FUCK IS HE COMING FROM? Seriously, i've never heard music approached from such a ridiculously bizarre angle. i love it, though. totally brilliant.

I agree with knifeintheback. I myself wasn't fair to this album at first. Hell, I haven't been fair to it about until very recently. Its magic has unfolded very slowly. If you come into BLD on the back of CotE and DAWCT, you are bound to be "confused". But once I gave it a fair chance and listened with patience, I noticed some very interesting things. There seems to be a certain type of melodic refrain that repeats throughout the album to help break up expectation of the overall tonality one has of a given track. It adds tension in a different way than Kayo Dot albums have hitherto, yet it resolves this tension as efficiently. I guess this is what Toby meant by more meaningful climaxes with BLD. I'd not necessarily say more meaningful (that's at least somewhat subjective), but different and as effective. =)

It IS a great album, it's just that it's a stark contrast to the other two, especially upon first impression.

i can't imagine melodies of this album staying in my head, but there's certainly something that sticks, maybe that's the beauty. strings remind me a bit of jonny greenwood's bodysong album

I've grown more fond of this over the past few months, for sure, and can now say with confidence that the title track is in my top five Kayo Dot songs. I like the whole album now, and LOVE probably four/five out of the seven songs. Yeah.

.........seriously. I've had the title track running through my head for 40+ days now. I'm going insane, on top of that, there are those other melodies that just flow in and out of my head, I'm losing it. Thanks Toby. I thought seeing them live would get it out of my head, or even listening to it again and again would make me not like it anymore, but I like it more and more. dammmmit!

Trying this again after taking a couple of months off from it (sometimes this works for me). It does get better with each listen, but it's still the biggest disappointment of the year for me. When it's good (first and last tracks), it's GOOD — I just wish it was more consistent. Even though it's a relatively short album, I feel like it has quite a bit of filler. Oh, well; just a minor slip-up in the grand scheme of things, really. Toby Driver is still a mad genius.

I grow to love this album more and more each time I listen to it. Still at four stars for me, but I can seriously see it climbing to five...and soon too.
