"High by the Beach" is a metaphor for taking control of the situation in the face of an unhealthy relationship. The lyrics reflect a frustrated and disillusioned heroine who is tired of being a victim and decides to take matters into her own hands. By singing of wanting to "get high by the beach", Lana is expressing her desire for a means of escape from her current predicament. In addition, the lyrics express a sense of defiance and strength, where the heroine is no longer buying into the lies of the other party, but instead opting for revenge and freedom.
