“Congrats” is a song about an immature, dishonest ex who broke the speaker’s heart. The congratulations in the song are sarcastic.
The song was first played during LANY’s Summer Forever Tour in early August 2022. However, lead singer Paul Klein already teased the song on June 21. In the Instagram post, it can be seen that the rough version of the song was already finished in April.
On the release date, drummer Jake Goss released footage of the band working on the song’s instrumental. In the video, somebody comments that this is the very first single for album five. It is the first song that is released in almost a year, following the "gg bb xx" album. Fans picked up that the song’s rock genre is different from LANY’s usual dream pop and dubbed it the beginning of a new era.
The song was accompanied by a lyric video featuring images from their tour.
