Great song but I wish Leonard had omitted the "giving me head" lyric. It really was disrespectful and it seems strange and out of place in an otherwise sweet and innocent song.

sorry, but that's what apparently Janis did and that's exactly what kind of a person she was known to be in an age that was as wild and boisterous as herself. you can't do them right by confusing sanctimoniousness with respect. and no, this song is neither sweet or innocent - it's an elegy for a dead, wild soulmate, for God's sake!

I don't agree whatsoever, nor did Leonard. He even gave a sincere apology about it (linked below). It's not about sanctimony at all. It's about keeping private matters private. If Janis wanted the information to be public, I am sure she would have done so herself. And it seems that Leonard also wanted to keep it private but mistakenly let it slip that she was the woman described in the song. https://rockcelebrities.net/the-reason-leonard-cohen-apologized-to-janis-joplin-after-her-death/

ok, I can see you a have a point here. but I do have a feeling the whole case, with Cohen first adding the line then forgetting to omit it and then regretting this decision and then using it anyway, somehow looks like an epitome of 1970s. I mean, they had a very different understanding of what is appropriate and what is private back then, and I'm wary of being judgmental about the different era and different people. especially because I'm not even sure Janis wouldn't have mentioned it at some point later in her life, if she had had that 'later'. or if she hadn't forgotten about this insignificant episode altogether, which would also be very much possible.

"You told me again you preferred handsome men But for me you would make an exception. You told me again you preferred handsome men But for me you would make an exception. Even more, this always cracked me: "You told me again you preferred handsome men But for me you would make an exception."

"Giving me head on the unmade bed" is one of the best rhyming lines in all music [2]

I've always loved this song, but in this case I have to ask the question nobody else seems to be: who is this incredible person singing it? It's a lovely, broken voice that enhances the song and gives it new meanings, and yet she hasn't signed herself in at all... or, if she did, I missed it. I'd love to hear more of her covers of Cohen and others.
