“I Don’t Wanna Be Funny Anymore” is the first track and first single on Lucy Dacus’s debut album "No Burden", which was released on September 9, 2016.
The song is about the speaker’s desire to change her role in the group despite the fact that such a sharp pivot in identity is unusual and isn’t as explicit a process as she proposes.
She sorts through the different roles that she could switch to and outlines how she can assume that role. While the speaker despairs about how entrenched her identity seems to be, it also shows the absurdity of the distinct roles that people take on during young adulthood and their cliched markers.
