One of my faves Manics records. It's like their own version of Sandinista or Achtung Baby/Zooropa. I can hear the references between U2's Numb and Lemon and Manics Wattsville blues and Miss europa disco dancer... All this album is like magnificent, musical trip through differents genres of alternative, rock and even electronic. Very interesting sound and compositions, Wire's lyrics also in top form. I don't understand why it never got enough of respect.

I've always really liked this album. First time hearing it for a few years. It's patchy, but that's one of the things I like about it. That spirit of trying new things, and experimenting probably mixed with a bit of a 'fk it' attitude makes this a notable point in their career. Not sure why they went in this direction, I suspect maybe they were feeling a bit closed in by success and expectation, & the style of This Is My Truth by the time that album ran its course. They came from in-your-face defiance after all, I think that part of them will always be there. I even like Miss Europa, as daft as it is. It's daft, but the bass line is great. Interesting time for the band as well, the had their biggest success to date with This Is My Truth and this album followed by Lifeblood is arguably their most meh years as far as them struggling and fan receptions. I wonder if this album and Lifeblood was an extended period of trying to find their feet post-huge success?

The B-sides to this album really make this a fertile period for the band....I think had the tracklisting been re-done with the stronger b-sides added to the album and maybe 2 or 3 tunes removed from the running time it would have been hailed as a classic. That said, the Music On Vinyl repressing is just FANTASTIC. The songs have had new life breathed into them. I'd strongly urge a listen to it if you can find a copy.

I remember back in 2001 when it first came out it got mixed reviews (to put it politely) and I didn't understand why. I still don't understand why it gets such a bad time now but each to their own. I'd put it on a par with Everything Must Go, but it's not up to the standard of TIMTTMY for me.

Loved this album back then and still love it to this day. Very underrated indeed. Up there with my favourites but not quite in the same league as their first three albums.

Manic Street Preachers definitely have some underrated material but this album is simply very mediocre. It has some of their most interesting melodies but the deliberately muted production doesn't work at all, especially on the more aggressive tracks...

One of the things i really like about this is it's disjointed nature, it just comes across very organic. It's like the Manics' 'Sandinista (The Clash). Sure, it could be argued that like 'Sandinista', 'Know Your Enemy' could have been made into a pretty classic album if it had been trimmed. But, every band should have an album like this in their catalogue i think, if only just to stir things up a bit. In the end it is about what the band wants to do regardless of who is listening and i get the feeling that they wanted to just let loose. You can understand why with the heavy mood of 'This Is My Truth..' and the emotional and musical weight of 'Everything Must Go'. They're ALL great :D

When this shines, it REALLY shines. When this sucks, it REALLY sucks. I wish I could love it more than I do but I'm getting there. Also, what frustrates me even more is that it was a fantastic era for b-sides so the shit ones could be replaced with the likes of "Fear of Motion" and "Groundhog Days" to create something really magnificent. However, as it stands, it's within the lower echelons of my Manics albums. I'm tempted to raise it above EMG though.

My mate said this was their worst album back in secondary school. Crazy talk, it's on a par with Everything Must Go and only just behind Holy Bible. Painfully underrated!

Such a brilliant, and underrated, album. I can't understand why everybody seems to dislike it so much. It's about a hundred times better than lifeblood, and this is my truth...

Is this anyone else's 'guilty pleasure' Manics album? God, why do I love it so?!
