listen, I am here to clarify the confusion in this shoutbox! she is definitely saying "an emotional being," which seems contrary to the preceding line, "I'm a machine," as we typically think of emotions as fluid and natural rather than mechanical. My interpretation, she's saying her emotions, while complex, are indeed formulaic like the workings of a machine, the result of conditioning and lived experiences, often operating on a sub-conscious level. Of course, the goal of therapy and mental health work is to bring to light those emotional machinations and their causes, and we know this album was heavily influenced by psychology, and, more specifically, the work of psychiatrist Elisabeth Kübler-Ross. While the album as a whole doesn't necessarily tie in neatly to this central concept (one of many criticisms of the Love + Fear era), this song is definitely a strong point!

i'm confused. i've always heard the lyrics as 'unemotional being', which fit well with with the previous line about being a machine and the general theme of feeling cut off from your emotions. but all the lyrics pages list the line as 'an emotional being', which is the opposite of a machine and doesn't fit the theme of the song at all? i am at a loss.

pretty sure she meant "unemotional being", spotify (for example) messes up lyrics all the time

Únicas músicas que prestam de Fear são Emotional Machine, Too Afraid e Soft to be Strong. O resto pode atear fogo!
