It's good. I can't understand how some complain about this work, when it's so much better than the stuff we see on tele nowadays. Even if you don't really fancy this style, you can't call this work lazy, uninspired and boring. Great vocals, great melodies, great guitar layers/stuff (not an expert, don't know the correct term), great organ stuff and other instruments. I'd hardly call songs like Castaway, Man on the Rocks and Nuclear 'average' songs. I hope we can see more albums from Mike in the future.

I've never heard anything by Mike Oldfield before this album, but we all have to start somewhere right? Anyway... With roughly four amazing songs I can say that I really liked the album, though I get why people say it's a little bland and overly long/repetitive in areas. At the end of the day this album made me feel good and I feel like it has a nice vibe and flow. Oh and I don't understand the hatred for the vocalist? I think he is awesome.

I like the album. It's solid rock. It's not terrible like a lot of you guys seem to think. Mike Oldfield has nothing to prove to anyone, let the man do what he wants. I think it's great he plays so many different genres. And for the record, I really like Luke's vocals. "Music is so many different things, to me it's just all music, so, it's quite natural for me to make a rock album as it is to make a classical album" - Mike Oldfield https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V9ZiWgG1W_0

I find that on last.fm a lot of people tend to be negative in album shoutboxes but for individual tracks the shoutboxes are mostly positive. I've always found that weird.

Weathered art fans do not suffer from such buyer's remorse. "I'm disappointed"? In the same way you'd be disappointed with a shade of wallpaper? Give the artist some respect. "Borderline lazy"? Then go write some of your own music that isn't! Then someone can tell you that the effort and soul you put into any piece of music regardless of it's complexity has no merit whatsoever because they paid for it and somehow deserve it more than you.

A lot has been written about this album; not all of it good. Let me start by asking some questions, namely: 1) Why try and compare this album to others; shouldn't it be judged on it's own merits?, 2) Is it valid to refer to tracks sounding like other artists etc.; isn't it easy to find similarities from any song to any other if you try hard enough? Personally I like this album, I like the layering of instruments, I like the vocals, I like the sentiment n the songs

Not forgetting 'Music of the Sphere's' which for me is one of his best ever. So its not that he can't still do it....!

Am I alone in thinking this is not one of Mike's best? Been listening on Spotify, and will probably not be purchasing. Never been a great fan of his exploits into Pop Rock such as Islands and the like. Though Crises was great, he's never really matched the individual songs from that album. Songs from Distant Earth and of course the great early Virgin albums for me I'm afraid.

I'm sorry, GoldenMS - no one is entiled to adulation just because they've been doing it for a long time, are a good musician, and have some good production values. To me this is a downright average middle-of-the-road album which might sound OK if you have no or low expectations of the artist, but this being Mike many of us expect more. If Mike wants to rest on his laurels and make a few quid with a potboiler, that's his choice. But we don't have to like it, and if we don't we're not all "hater posers sh*theads" just because you - even if you have 12,920 Oldfield plays up to yesterday - or any other besotted fan says so.

why are there only posts by hater posers sh*theads? Mike said he wont do any album after MOTS. Work on Olympics ceremony made him want to do another one. So here it is......a little oldage oldfield bonus album. Oldfield is growing as a person..just like his albums do. If you not noticed after them decades...then...hm...maybe you missed something in his creation and you should start over again. Still profesional sound, master handwrite, sometimes little bit boring as oldage is......but IT IS Oldfield. If you are that naive that you think there will be another Amarok or Hergest Ridge...then you are as dumb as your post. Spiller got awesome voice, not many pensioners can still play guitar like this, so listen...enjoy...and stop talking garbage :)

Mike always seem to do the things against what we want from him. With all those epic albums, when the "mainstream" wanted more cheesy stuff and then he came out with ommadawn, tubular bells, amarok. And now, when "mainstream" wanted a really new and epic album, he came out with a cheesy album, and this cheesy album is one of the best. All it's needed is the right mood and a state of peace within ourselves ^_^

It's not as if he hasn't done albums like this before and it beats most of them. Enjoyable summer listening. Mike Oldfield has nothing to prove to anyone.

This is just insipid. And why does he cover a gospel song for a closing number?

Nice one. After the promo of "Sailing" i was disappointed, but without the cheesy videoclip the track works. Moonshine called the usual Oldfield-goosebump, although (or even because) you feel home at "The spectral army" oder "Song of the Boat Men". Leland Sklar & John Robinson = great support. I'd like to see that on stage. Still my fav albums are Amarok, Crises, FMO and MonR is far away from these, but it shows Mikes diversity. After Music of the Spheres another surprising album. Let's hope, Mike got's another "classic" Oldfield-release in queue.
