The song is about Alicia Scardetta, an ex-girlfriend of lead singer Alan Palomo, who also happened to be the one that named the band. She and Palomo were going to spend an afternoon on acid together, but it fell through, and he wrote this song to apologize to her.
In a 2009 interview with Pitchfork, Alan Palomo explained that this song began the Neon Indian project as a whole.
It began with the song “Should Have Taken Acid With You”. During holiday break last year, Alicia and I were supposed to get together and spend an afternoon on acid, but it fell through. I felt really bad about it so I wrote this song and sent it to her and figured that was that. Then she responded, like, “Wow there’s really something to this.”
