“A Troubled Mind” is the opening track of Noah Kahan’s Cape Elizabeth EP, talking about the theme of ungrounded, excessive worries and fears.
In the spring of 2020, when the EP was released, the world was currently undergoing the Covid-19 pandemic. During that time, public life was restricted and many people around the world were required to stay at home, not being able to go to work, school, or meet up with friends.
Noah Kahan had to leave New York City and go to Vermont to stay in his parent’s house with the rest of his family. As he mentioned in an interview, he would often spend hours just worrying about things, a feeling he took up for “A Troubled Mind.”
In the weeks before the EP’s release, Kahan regularly did Instagram livestreams in which he premiered songs from the EP, including “A Troubled Mind.” Sometimes, he was joined by his brother, Simon Kahan, who ended up contributing backing vocals to the song.
