Orquestra Contemporanea de Olinda (OCO) is a happy collision between the blazing brass carnival sounds of a traditional frevo marching band and the driving post-manguebeat all-stylings of the contemporary Pernambuco scene. It was conceived by percussionist Gilu in 2008, bringing together a team of experienced players from a number of well-known bands with alumni of Olinda's famous Henrique Dias Music Academy, directed by Maestro Ivan do Espirito Santo. Their first album brought them a Latin Grammy nomination and they've become a much-loved live act throughout Brazil and have toured in the USA and Europe. From the hybrid of Latin grooves and Afro rhythms, the Orquestra has carved out a sound of its own, borne of ten musicians with different backgrounds sharing a desire to bring a new multi-faceted modern sound of Pernambuco to the world.
