Happy 15th anniversary, Idlewild! Listening for the first time, and I feel like a lot of these tracks were overlooked in the greater scheme of Outkast's discography. Merging genres prominent in the 1930s made a really interesting concept of an album and a very unique and ambitious way to end a run. Shame that Outkast didn't acknowledge Idlewild's 15th with ATLiens' 25th instead of just the latter, but it's already enough that they're looking back in the first place.

Last I remember, hollywood divorce, idlewild blue, and morris brown were the only tracks i liked off this album. I need to re-listen and see if it sounds any better years later.

Andre's a jack of all trades but only a master of some... someone really should have attached the leash here. It's not as if the further OutKast (or should I say Andre) veers away from hip-hop the better the music's going to get (I really hope that's not the premise certain people are working on), not exactly anyway... Andre's a modestly talented vocalist at best and I refuse to believe otherwise...

Not your conventional soundtrack but practically a third of the album is included in the movie, surely that's got to count for something... I think we can agree that the album isn't solely designed to reflect the story of the accompanying movie. Therefore, some songs are naturally going to differ from each other, which is cool but eventually a little too telling. Big Boi is gradually phased out as Andre's exhausting caterwauling takes centre stage. The last quarter of the album is a mixture of drab, unrealised tracks more ideas than songs and cringeworthy attempts at swing by Andre... I think a little more rapping and a little less singing would have made a difference. I also would have liked Andre to divulge more - a spoken word on Mutron Angel or something. All in all, Idlewild's a very good album but it's no fucking classic...

It dips in the second half significantly and looses its balance between soundtrack and studio album...

Very true. I just wish Andre would sing less... I find Idlewild a trek to get through but I can appreciate it for what it is. 'Kast's worst album is still borderline very good/excellent.

'That's because hip-hop "heads" are notoriously shallow and narrow-minded'. I'm not a fan of this album at all but that's the truth.

so now you know my mind and the intellectual depths I possess via my charts cause I may bump 50 cent or something like that every once in awhile. shut the fuck up 4 eyes for you wake up from a coma with glass shards stuck to your retinas from a haymaker punch. You play Madonna and your such a loser that you ban users on your page, via me not being able to post a response on your page. get a life. I'm an OutKast fan for life but the albums lousy. Get over it. And quit the black on black crime "Coon" use and shit. You're just bringing your own black ass down typifying your own people. I'm black too but I don't go around calling people coons unless they deserve it from EXTREME ignorance. Raz-B B2Gay lookin fruit-cup.

stop with the over analyzing, the "richness" and "splendid sounds" and whatever the hell else when describing this album. its plain ok, nothing more nothing less. It's Kast's worst album out of the best discography in rap music and defend Idlewild all you want, it should have been better. They should have followed up with their Diamond selling, Grammy winning 03 strong double disc with a better album. Just because Andre sings with a blues guitar in the background doesn't make the album "Different" and "Intellectual" and "Something rap heads just dont understand". I'm an outkast stan but man, this album barely gets played. "Morris Brown" and other cuts are just bland. I play the "Hollywood Divorce" instrumental the most out of anything on here. the album gets a weak 4/5. should get a 3.5

I've heard all the shit on the radio and in the clubs and bars by these guys. I liked it, but never looked further. Starting with this album. I'm on track 7 now and haven't had the urge to skip forward so far. Different, I like it. We'll see how it goes, especially when it's on my mp3

dont get me wrong, this IS a great album, i could never deny that. as for comments on hip hop heads being shallow and narrow minded, i feel as if a lot of them saw this band grow from southernplayalistic into the huge force they are today and felt disilusioned that they simply abandoned the MCing on this album. you're a fool if you dont realise dre and b-boi as the talented MC's they are. good songwriters and singers they may be, but they are rappers. this album nailed the last one in the MC coffin for dre i feel.

re: 52 tracks... But how many REALLY GOOD?! this is labeled all wrong. there aren't 52 tracks, and the tracks that play are incorrectly named. and it's really all quite impressive.--------- edit: playing them through the playlist feature plays the correct tracks, but this page didn't when i first responded. another opinion would probably be helpful.

This is an excellent album, but it's maybe not what those who only enjoy rap will appreciate.

Hahaha, well Last.fm is working on stuff now to fix that. Shouldn't be long, I would assume.

I had no idea there were 52 tracks on this album -- or that there were so many duplicate songs. =/
