With feverishly enchanting vocals and haunting storytelling, Paris Paloma offers her guts on a platter in the Old Sea Brigade-assisted track “yeti.”
Indie’s oldest soul encased in a 23-year-old vengeful woman’s body, Paloma is poetry at its most weaponized. Able to pierce through skin with the most gentle chords, there is something about her music that stains the soul. It’s honest and consuming, leading us on a trail of raw emotion and demanded retribution. From the burn of female rage to a debilitatingly shattered heart, she gives words to the feelings that typically shock us out of volume.
What makes the track so dystopian is how Old Sea Brigade’s vocals melt with Paloma’s, almost impossible to believe that the two weren’t in the same room during its recording. “I wrote the song back in August of 2022 and worked with Justin Glasco who produced it,” Paloma shares. “I knew that I wanted a featured vocal on there and there were some names thrown around and my label pointed me towards Old Sea Brigade and once I heard Ben’s voice I couldn’t entertain the thought of anyone else being on it because his voice just fit so perfectly. He recorded it remotely, we never actually met when he recorded it.” The two eventually ended up meeting in January of 2023, joining on stage in London to bring “yeti” alive.
In “yeti,” the UK-based singer-songwriter speaks to finding a stranger in the shell of an old lover, greeting ice where there was once fire. As she continues to reel from the momentum of her viral hit “Labour,” which spoke on the reclamation of women’s history, as long as she continues to bring the stories written in her bedroom out from the pages of her diary, her success feels promised.
