Biography

Paul Gerald Cattermole (7 March 1977 - 6 April 2023) was an English musician. He was previously a member of the successful pop group S Club 7 and was the lead singer of Charlie Bullitt until he left in October 2005.

Initially Paul had dreams of being a rugby star, but didn't feel that he was good enough to pursue this dream. Like Hannah Spearritt, Paul was a member of the National Youth Music Theatre and appeared, alongside Hannah, in Pendragon (1994). While at college he duetted in a college production with Emma Bunton (later to become famous as a member of the Spice Girls). One of Paul's tutors recalled in an interview: "Paul was a quiet student and didn't initially exhibit the star quality he clearly has. However, something clicked when Paul and Emma Bunton, who was in the same class the year before, ended up duetting in a college production, and from then on I half-expected that he would go on to great things." Paul's previous jobs before S Club 7 included being a paperboy, a postman, a butcher, a theatre doorman, a dustman and a toilet cleaner. He did a theatre and acting course at the prestigious Mountview Drama School. While at Mountview he formed a nu-metal band called Skua with some of his friends. He was spotted by a neroSimon Fuller's 19 Management when he appeared in a show there and was asked to audition for S Club 7.

The group had four UK number one hit singles, one UK number one album and one US top ten hit. He co-starred in the groups own TV series - Miami 7 (1999), LA 7 (2000), Hollywood 7 (2001) and the first four episodes of Viva S Club (2002). He took part in two UK tours, won two prestigious BRIT Awards and numerous other awards. Most famously, in March 2001, he was arrested and cautioned (along with fellow S Club 7 members Jon Lee and Bradley McIntosh) after being caught in possession of cannabis in London's Covent Garden. In October 2001, amid a blaze of publicity, Hannah Spearritt revealed that she had been in a secret relationship with Paul for the previous 6 months.

Paul was the first to leave S Club 7, in June 2002, declaring his dislike of pop music and the highly commercialised world of pop in general. After leaving S Club he rejoined his old school nu-metal band Skua. However, Skua split up before they’d even started and Paul vanished into obscurity until early 2005 when he re-emerged as the lead singer and songwriter of a rock band called Charlie Bullitt. Throughout most of 2005 the group performed in a number of clubs and pubs in such places as London, Brighton and Aberdeen - but they failed to attract any significant attention and in October 2005 Paul left the group.

In an interview in 2006 Paul said that he hated being in a manufactured band and may never do a reunion. Paul also revealed during the interview that he has a younger cousin called Lee Cattermole, who plays professional football for Middlesbrough F.C..

He split up with Hannah Spearritt in early 2006.

In October 2007 an official MySpace page appeared for Paul, containing 4 new songs co-written with friend Lee Turner.

On 1st December 2007 Paul and his former band mate Bradley McIntosh did a DJ set at University of Winchester Christmas Ball On the 10th of December 2007 the pair played a DJ set at The Old Firestation in Bournemouth, the Bournemouth University Union club.
