Dark Matter supposedly promised to be Pearl Jam's best in nearly two decades based on some reviews I read. After listening to it, it seems to me to be one of their worst albums, if not the worst, as was I assumed when listening to the previous singles. Rock to please nostalgic fifty-somethings that feels like food reheated in the microwave. I mean, there are some good songs and it's nice that McCready has more ease in the recording, but nothing memorable that will encourage you to listen to the album over and over again. I'll give him more chances, btw. I prefer Gigaton right now even though it's a pretty mediocre album for me. P.S.: I'm a big fan of PJ and EV. They are one of these important bands in my life (beyond their first albums), but I think that in the studio they no longer have anything to say.

Stuff like this happens every time a legacy band releases an album heralded as "back to basics". Reviews and some fans call it the best work since something, and fan discussion ranks it highly. It's recency bias, and soon reality sets in. Take a look at how Metallica's 72 Seasons hit compared to consensus on it a year later.

This is perhaps because 72 Seasons was cringy garbage. Fans were just glad it wasn't St Anger. Dark Matter is nothing like that.

I felt nothing listening to Dark Matter. (At least Gigaton was interesting — I do like that album.) After my Dark Matter listen I put Yield on, and that really hit the spot. It’s the difference between artists inspired and moved to create versus artists just doing more of what they do (…with worse production). You never know, that fire could be lit again, but it seems to be a pretty low light (sorry) in 2024. I’m glad for those of you who are enjoying it though.

Anyone else feel like they released two of the weakest songs as singles? They're not bad, but for sure not two of my favorite songs off the album

Yeah, none of the songs are bad...the singles (wreckage i did like) didn't grab my attention like literally 6-7 songs off the album did to where I was like "now this is what im talking about" haha.

Good news! I’ve got Pearl Jam tickets for Manchester. Bad news! I’m now homeless.

Despite the plastic sound of the new album, there was hope in the first four tracks that now that same “return” would happen. But this, unfortunately, did not happen. P.S. ...but I really liked the panning of the guitars in the first two tracks.
