Biography
There are at least ten real or fictional artists that have used the name Phantasm, including a viol consort, a progressive rock band, a rap MC, and several defunct rock and metal bands.
1. Phantasm (1994-) is an award-winning quartet of viols, founded in 1994 by Laurence Dreyfus. Their repertoire is centered on 16th- and 17th-century English consort music. The quartet's numerous albums include works by composers William Byrd, Orlando Gibbons, John Jenkins, William Lawes, John Ward, and others. Phantasm has won Gramophone awards for Best Baroque Instrumental Recording (1997), CD of the Year finalist (2004), and Best Early Music Recording finalist (2011), among many other awards and nominations. In 2005 Phantasm was appointed Consort-in-Residence at the University of Oxford, and in 2010 they filled the same role at Oxford's Magdalen College, collaborating with the Magdalen College Choir and director Daniel Hyde.
Based in London, Phantasm tours extensively in Europe, North America, and East Asia. Laurence Dreyfus (treble viol and director) was born in Boston, Mass. Phantasm began as a quartet with Dreyfus and Wendy Gillespie (treble viols), Jonathan Manson (tenor viol) and Markku Luolajan-Mikkola (bass viol). 3. Phantasm is an MC in the underground rap duo The Dwellas, formed in 1994 in Brooklyn, New York as the Cella Dwellas. The duo released two albums: Realms 'n Reality (1996) as the Cella Dwellas and The Last Shall Be First (2000) as The Dwellas.
4. Phantasm is also the stage name of a fictional rap artist, voiced by Method Man, in the U.S. animated sitcom Chozen (2014).

6. Phantasm (1997) was a Christian pop/rock group that released one self-titled album.
7. Phantasm (1988-1993), an American death metal band, was born out of the ashes of Human Evil near the end of 1988. Founded by Tony Brandt (vocals & drums) and Scott Mckillop (guitar), the band released a demo, "Lycanthropy," in April 1990, and a second demo, "The Abominable," in October 1992.
The band played four Metalfests with Slayer, Sepultura, Impetigo, Deicide, and Obituary, as well as other shows with Bolt Thrower, Morbid Angel, Entombed, and others. In March 1995 they re-released "The Abominable" with one new song, "Gut Suckers," as their first full-length CD. Later that year the band broke up over personal differences.
8. Phantasm (1992-1993) was a Russian band that released a a demo, "Always Say Die," in 1992 and an album, Keeper of Death, in 1993 before splitting up.

10. Phantasm (1980s), an American thrash/speed metal band, included former Metallica member Ron McGovne, Hirax's singer Katon W. DePena, and Jim Korthe, former lead singer of 3rd Strike and Dimestore Hoods, on the drums. They released two demos in the mid-1980s.
