“ICU” comes as the third and final track to be released as a single for Phoebe Bridgers album "Punisher". When the tracklist was announced the track was called “ICU”, a play on how the title sounds, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was renamed to “I See You” for the release of the single. After the full album was released the track was retitled again, back to “ICU” and all physical editions have the track listed as such.
The song is about her breakup with drummer/band member Marshall Vore.
The track also features backing vocals from Jenny Lee Lindberg who is also known for her work in the band Warpaint.
"I had that line first, and I’ve had it for at least five years. Just feeling like a waking zombie every day, that’s how my depression manifests itself. It’s like lethargy, just feeling exhausted. I’m not manic depressive — I fucking wish. I wish I was super creative when I’m depressed, but instead, I just look at my phone for eight hours. And then you start kind of falling in love and it all kind of gets shaken up and you’re like, “Can this person fix me? That’d be great.” This song is about being close to somebody. I mean, it’s about my drummer. This isn’t about anybody else. When we first broke up, it was so hard and heartbreaking. It’s just so weird that you could date and then you’re a stranger from the person for a while. Now we’re super tight. We’re like best friends, and always will be. There are just certain people that you date where it’s so romantic almost that the friendship element is kind of secondary. And ours was never like that. It was like the friendship element was above all else, like we started a million projects together, immediately started writing together, couldn’t be apart ever, very codependent. Phoebe states in an article from Rolling Stone (May 2020):
"It’s about my breakup with my drummer We dated for a few years, made music every day, and were extremely codependent. We became like family to each other, so our breakup was extremely tough. But if this tells you anything about our relationship, we wrote this song together, just like everything else."
As noted in the same article, Phoebe originally titled the track “ICU,” but decided to change it to “I See You,” out of respect to the ongoing 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, or, as she put it during the interview,
