It's totally necessary for the concept. Like many have said before, it's a brief respite from the unbearable despair that is the rest of the album and is followed by the punch of Machine Gun. I can see why a trip-hop fan would not be a fan of ukelele folk, but I find it to be a welcome moment in the middle of an incredibly dark album.

I imagine how Beth, Adrian and Jeff sitting near fireplace in small house (and it's winter outside) and sing this song...

I had a dream, playing this song to the girl that I loved. Damn. Anyway, lovely track.

i love this so much even though the song is not like mind blowing its just the fact that its sandwiched in between the 2 most intense songs on the album just compliments it so well and reminds me of the genius of portishead and this album.

very surprised to see the hate for this song. The 'gimmicky' effect of the vocals is a perfect contrast to the realism of the lyrics, and it's a genius prelude to machine gun. Gonna have to agree with madboatz's comment below me.

Basic idea for the track came from this scene: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AI8NuFAETMQ

PEOPLE LIKE THE ONE'S THAT ARE COMPLAINING ABOUT HOW THIS IS "GIMMICKY" OR THE "WORST THING EVER RECORDED" ARE THE REASONS WHY "COMPETENT" MUSICIANS ARE CONSTANTLY RESORTING TO PUTTING OUT MEDIOCRE GARBAGE. ARTISTS ARE CONSTANTLY TRYING TO SATISFY LISTENERS WHO ARE AFRAID OF A LITTLE DIVERSITY OR VERSATILITY IN A RECORD. IT FITS RIGHT IN WITH THE REST OF THE TRACKS. CLOSE YOUR MOUTH, OPEN YOUR EARS AND STOP ACTING SO BUTT-HURT.

Because it's offensive on every possible level. It's such a shock to have a song that's so horribly banal and gimmicky on a very good album full of at least some originality and spirit. What the fuck were they thinking? "Oh hey, we have a great album let's ruin it by singing like a bunch of assholes." Unbelievable.

So gorgeous, a wonderful little "oasis" in the bleak atmosphere of "We Carry On" and "Machine Gun"

One of the reasons I think I like "Third" better than "Dummy" is because its music shows a lot more versatility, i.e. this song.
