Give Out But Don't Give Up is a 1994 album by Primal Scream. Released on 28 March 1994, it was the follow up to the successful Screamadelica. The album features more classic rock approach departing a bit from their dance-rock style.
The album spawned the hit singles ‘Rocks’, ‘Jailbird’ and ‘(I’m Gonna) Cry Myself Blind’, but the album wasn’t as commercially or critically successful as Screamadelica.
The album cover, a photograph of a confederate flag by William Eggleston, has been very controversial. The band claimed that the inclusion of the flag on the cover was to represent the Southern United States’ influence on the album’s musical styles. According to them, the flag’s use on the album cover is not an endorsement of anything that the flag stands for. Primal Scream is known for their left-wing, anti-racist and anti-fascist politics.
In 2021, the album cover was changed on streaming services, removing the confederate flag.
In 2018, Primal Scream released Give Out But Don’t Give Up: The Original Memphis Recordings, a compilation of previously unreleased session recordings from the album.
