“My Name is Mud” is a tale about killing a man with a baseball bat, sung by a narrator nicknamed Mud. The title is a play on the phrase “Your name is mud,” which means to be disgraced or unpopular. Though the phrase may have earlier origins, since the mid-19th century it has been associated with Dr. Samuel Mudd, the physician who helped John Wilkes Booth after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Dr. Mudd was banished to an island prison in the Gulf of Mexico for his role in the infamous crime.
On November 30, 2010, Primus released a download-only single titled “Me Llamo Mud.” This is a new recording of “My Name Is Mud” with Claypool singing the lyrics entirely in Spanish.
