Controversy is the fourth studio album of Prince released in 1981 by Warner Bros. Records. It peaked at number 21 on the US Billboard 200. All the writing, production and most of the instrumentation was done by Prince himself. This album is the first to reference Prince in his signature colour - Purple, use sensational spelling (eg. You = U).
Fun fact: Prince's Eponymous second album - Prince, his third album Dirty Mind and Controversy don't have the album name on the official album covers instead they only have "Prince" written in the album appropriate font, which might be a hint that these three album were somehow connected with a theme.
Controversy continues in the same vein of new wave-tinged funk on Dirty Mind, emphasizing Prince's fascination with synthesizers and synthesizing disparate pop music genres. It is also more ambitious than its predecessor, attempting to tackle social protest ("Controversy," "Ronnie, Talk to Russia," "Annie Christian") along with sex songs ("Jack U Off," "Sexuality"), and it attempts to bring funk to a rock audience and vice versa.
