According to the Virginia Plain Songfacts, lead singer Bryan Ferry took the song's title from a painting he did titled "Virginia Plain," when he was an art student. It featured a huge packet of Virginia Slims cigarettes with a picture of Andy Warhol superstar Baby Jane Holzer on the front, standing in the middle of a plain.
