Matt basically left Blizzard with Blizzard North. Because he's not a sell-out.

"Overall, I'm disappointed with the atmosphere of the game (which is nowhere near its predecessors, that's because of music, which was a huge part of it, the art direction, and cheesy 'epicness', it just feels like a bit darker Warcraft), but the gameplay itself is so fucking addicting. Uelmen's music was about creating a dark atmosphere, this soundtrack lacks his pounding, tribal drums and dark ambient tracks mixed with various folk influences. It was unique and played with passion, while Diablo 3 music could as well be a soundtrack for another Warcraft game. [2] :(

Yeah, but the ambient tracks aren't anything special at all too. The music kinda suits the game, as it's more similar to (World of) Warcraft, even more than I thought it would be. It should be more dynamic though, Matt Uelmen's drums would be a better fit. Overall, I'm disappointed with the atmosphere of the game (which is nowhere near its predecessors, that's because of music, which was a huge part of it, the art direction, and cheesy 'epicness', it just feels like a bit darker Warcraft), but the gameplay itself is so fucking addicting. Having played the game (Server error aside...), There are actually a lot of awesome ambient tracks in the game (In the dungeons and such), most of which are not included in the CE soundtrack. Also the game is extremely fast paced so I would have to say the music does fit the gameplay very well, when you kill some important plot boss and the epic music cues up it feels very sayisfying.

I don't blame him, I'm only criticizing the music. I agree with you on that the audio side had to follow other changes, including the visual design of the game (which is rather controversial and a disappointing decision as well).

At least it isn't as bad as say anything by Zimmer and his ghost writers... Anyway, since D3 has definitely departed from it's roots in terms of visual design, I guess they had to amp up the music to fit the mainstream bill... perhaps if anyone is itching for more classic Uelman, they will find that Torchlight 1 & 2 to their liking. On a side note: I love that Uelman included a direct quote of Scriabin's music in one of the tracks in Torchlight 1. Great Stuff...

It's not Brower's fault that blizzard forced his hand to make more "epic" orchestral bullshit. Nothing wrong with orchestral or classical music but the throw-away, forgettable trash that is used as soundtracks for blockbuster movies and games is borderline deplorable. The music has no value other than to give the listener chills as some generic crescendo occurs. Oh but how "epic" it is!! I agree with the LoD OST sentiment, it's a shame.

I think the soundtrack has a fairly balanced amount of ambient, orchestra, as well as ethic instruments, it's just more mixed in each track rather than one track focusing on one particular element. I think Brower did a decent if not a great job with what he is given, and to be fair you can't blame him for emulating Uelman's style, because if he didn't people would just get pissed and the same time he's got to make it sound newer and appeal more to the mainstream epic sounding soundtracks.

Even if Uelmen plays the guitar parts (there aren't many of them anyway), how does it change anything? His Torchlight 2 soundtrack has a much stronger Diablo feel to it. After a few listens I have to say that the soundtrack is enjoyable, but anyway, it sounds as if Blizzard played the Lord of Destruction OST to a few musicians and an orchestra and told them to compose something similar. Uelmen's music was about creating a dark atmosphere, this soundtrack lacks his pounding, tribal drums and dark ambient tracks mixed with various folk influences. It was unique and played with passion, while Diablo 3 music could as well be a soundtrack for another Warcraft game. That's why we are disappointed.

The hell? you people do realize that the guitar parts were played by Uelman himself right? also, I think the soundtrack is pretty amazing. Especially the Arreat and Barbarian tracks, Brower manages to maintain that Wagnerian feel that Uelman was going for in the LoD, I think it's amazing.

Diablo 3 is horrible. It's a shame game this big (It's not released yet, but I think it's safe to say that it's huge) gets that bad music. Every other composer would do a better job. They should hire Jeremy Soule :) There's no single cue in Diablo that I like.

Прекрасные саундтреки, да еще и созданные мужчиной, обладающим неземной красотой и чистыми, словно лунный свет глазами.

His new stuff (Echo Isles Liberation event) is really interesting, but I've always though that the troll motif (from Zul'Aman to Northrend) is definitely Derek's matter? Well, so he was able to supply Derek Duke, but he will be never able to supply Matt Uelmen's unique guitar style in Diablo 3, in a good way. :)
