I've loved Sepultura for years but only in the past few have I really strongly embraced Bestial Devastation and Morbid Visions. God, this stuff fucking RULES.

Sooooooo underrated that it even hurts. Scream Bloody Gore is considered the blueprint for death metal, like the album that came up with the now standard tremolo-styled riff pattern and stuff, but as much as I love it and recognize it for what it is, Morbid Visions had already the same pattern like a year before. SBG was probably recorded in 86 too and I know some songs already existed and were on demos, which the Sep guys probably listened back then, but come on, Morbid Visions was a full length album! This is death metal the way Death made it big even before Death made it big!

I dunno, to me these tremolos still feel very much in spirit of thrash, I mean 'Hell Awaits' or 'Show No Mercy'-era Slayer, kind of. Thrash metal and even traditional speed/heavy/power metal (remember Running WIld!) uses tremolos too. It if far from being a sufficient condition in itself. On the other hand, I would say that Death's SBG clearly exploits tremolos in a death metal way, albeit only occassionally, thrash metal still prevails (understandable since some of those songs trace back to 1984!).

Seriously... Arise and Beneth the remains are better than Morbid Visions. But everytrhing after 1993 is really hard to compare with the 86 til 91 phase of Sepultura.

First Sepultura album I bought. Actually, I bought their albums in the same order as they originally came out in. This album is really evil and sinister sounding. It sounds so cold and dark.

Brilliant album. I do like Schizophrenia and Beneath the Remains better, but this beats pretty much everything else they ever did.[2]

I love stuff like this from when extreme metal didn't have such rigid boundaries and one thing could easily fit into different subgenres. This album hits the spot for me nicely whether I'm in the mood for thrash, death or black metal.

This album is great and brutal. I think Schizophrenia is better, but this is a masterpiece too.

Can you imagine these lyrics were written by the same dude who now dedicates every album he makes to god?
