It's always the hardest choice when I have to pick which blind artist I like more between him and Ray Charles.

You know how people can type blindly? That's a bit how this works. The piano happens to be one of the easiest instruments to play without sight. All notes are next to each other on the board, each key representing one unique note and the octaves are ordered in such a way you can recognize individual notes by their shape and the relative position to their neigbouring keys. So in the end all he has to do is find the central C, then count down 12 notes to find the octave below and 12 up to find the octave higher (and so on) and then position his hand to form the intervals that make up chords or a ladder. Repeat and practice this enough times and playing without sight becomes a second habit. Though not blind I'm a pianist myself and I can play whole pieces with my eyes closed easily without thinking if I want to.

I can't even type blindly I'd be a terrible blind man lol but ty for a genuine response it is something I have long wondered about Stevie and Ray. Apparently they make braille music sheets and you have to learn to play one part while reading with your other hand. Crazy stuff

yeah as a musician, being able to learn stuff of the top of your head or by ear is very useful in general but in this case even more so. Blind people often have increased capabilities with their other senses, to compensate for the lack of sight, including hearing so they have a lot better ear than most non-blind. In the case of Stevie I think I read he has perfect pitch, meaning he can a hear a note and know without context what exact note that is which allows him to learn and play music without reading.

for the last couple of years whenever I hear a stevie song i've been telling myself i need to check out more of his stuff. I spent the last few days finally working through his discography and I can't find the words to sum it up, but i'm so pleased i did. what an absolute legend.

this guy's music is an ode to every detail that makes life worth it. sipping lemonade, slow dancing, eating your favorite meal, a bright morning after a good night's rest. he reminds us to not take things for granted and appreciate every step of the way. joy and life are one, and he's both personified.

If there’s ever a documentary on Stevie, it ought to be at least four or five parts to really do him justice and capture the full scope of his contributions to culture and society and his very interesting life/personality/talents.

Stevie is such a genius that comes along once in a lifetime, when it’s all said and done I believe he’s up there with the likes of Beethoven and Mozart. Timeless music that will endure forever.
