It's incredibly pretentious to undermine a great work of art because the lyrics aren't flowery. I actually think the bluntness is a great strength here. There's something so beautiful and poetic about the matter of fact delivery.

@FoolmeThrice today I learned that instrumental music is not music according to your "definition"

What a bunch of elitist pricks. This album is amazing. The lyrics are genius. What the hell do you mean there is no literary merit? Do you go home and sing Wordworth poems? Piss off. Music is supposed to be words held together by instruments, that's the definition. I don't know what you guys expected. Go listen to Radiohead and jack off into your pillowcases.

Equally awkward, embarrassing, personal, painful, humourus, honest, bleak and life affirming. Fucking great album. And, sure, the lyrics are flawed, but so too are the lives of the people they describe. That's the point. [2] this is a really good description of how i feel about this album

Jim Wise killed his wife out of love for her at her bedside. And then he put the gun to his head but he failed at suicide. Damn....

Not a favorite of mine but its sincerity, as others have said, and its stark personality keeps me coming back to it.

He should not be an author. His "prose" is has no literary merit. It's riddled with countless clunky/cringe-worthy cliches, casualisms, and solecisms. Surpassing Grade 10 diarists in authorial artistry might be a challenge for Mark if Benji represents his ability. I only listen to the album because it's expressed with refreshing sincerity and forthrightness. I also dislike most song lyrics/poetry because they're so unspecific as to be meaningless. Fortunately, this album has no poetry. But Benji can still test your patience. It's a bit like Daniel Johnston where you have to forgive the songwriting blunders and poetastry because he's sort of retarded.

Wouldn't it be more logical if he became a writer, without the songs? This is total overkill, just a waterfall of words with a guitar and some drums trying to keep it all together...

"I See a Darkness of the 00s?" you mean, the 10s? ;) apt comparison nonetheless, this record is a powerful punch to the soul and a revitalizing listen for any fan of kozelek
