I just listened to this for the first time in about 15 years. I nearly fell asleep at the wheel. I can't remember what I used to think was so special about this stuff. It's like Big Star without the variety or Matthew Sweet without the energy or balls. This is just the epitome of the crap smirking Buddy Holly lookalikes used to call "perfect pop" back in the '90s while dissing Loveless with lines like "let me know when you get within the vicinity of a song." Oh yeah? Why don't you let me know what it was like to be an old man by age 25. Thank goodness that particular variety of rockist critical hooey is dead and buried.

Serious question: What about this even screams Big Star? Ever since getting into this band circa last week (lol) that's all I've been seeing. I took a listen to Big Star's #1 Record and I'm not making the connection. Yes, Teenage Fanclub sounds classic, but not in a way that would pinpoint me to Big Star, more of a general 60's/70's sound. By the way, I think you need to shoot them a bit more bail than you're giving them now. Some of these melodies are super infectious ("The Concept," "December," and "Metal Baby" just to name a few songs)

Glad to have e-buddies who recommended this to me. Been listening to it again for the first couple times in years, and... well, this is classic.

I like the album, but I think it kinda misses out on the "power" part of "power pop". I blame the producer for not having the guitars and drums sound ballsy enough.

It has to go down as a contender for the worst album art in the history of rock, but it really doesn't matter as it is a good album! ;-)

My favorite album of all-time. One of the few CD's I can truly listen to the whole way through without skipping a single track. Simply a masterpiece. This is the kind of album I wish I could make. The fact that I own 2 copies of the album says something. I wish more people knew about this CD...
