Whenever I hear this, I always picture John chasing a woman who's shorter than five feet through the woods with a gun 🤣💀.

No, I did not enjoy it. Listening to a man threatening to kill a little girl is completely awful. I tried to listen to this again, and I had to stop it before I got half through it.

Well, the subject of the song is jealousy and it is sung from a perspective of a jealous dude. It paints an image it is supposed to paint. It doesn't mean you are supposed to relate to a character or anything like that. This song doesn't imply that this perspective is right or cool in any way.

for everybody bickering, wikipedia sums up the matter pretty tidily: 'Lennon wrote "Run for Your Life" based on "Baby Let's Play House", which was one of Presley's early singles on the Sun record label. Lennon retained a line from the Presley track – "I'd rather see you dead, little girl, than to be with another man." The lyrical theme is jealousy, and Lennon later disavowed the song as a misogynistic piece.'

more specifically: 'Lennon designated it as his "least favourite Beatles song" in a 1973 interview and later said it was the song he most regretted writing.'

While cancelling in its current incarnation is a social disease, the lyrics in this one (later disavowed by John) are deeply uncomfortable when you’re aware of how many women (and children and pets) are killed when attempting to leave relationships.

I agree, the song doesn't sit right now and I find myself wondering how it did at the time. The Wikipedia entry for this song also states, "Lennon designated it as his least favourite Beatles song in a 1973 interview and later said it was the song he most regretted writing."

It's a good song. Sure, the attitudes expressed are abusive, but John was airing out real feelings he had. He was a deeply jealous man. Given he had some serious attachement and abandonment issues with his parents as a child, it makes sense he would develop a deep fear of further abandonment. This rocking little song talks about a dark and a very real aspect of the human experience, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Well put. Always get the jeebies when adult women are refered to as "little girls" or similar though.

Putting aside for a moment that John disavowed this song and its misogyny later in his career, saying this is dark and real is analogous to saying a racist or homophobic song is simply dark and real. On one hand, yes, that’s true - it would be (and very much is) a very real aspect of the human experience for some people. It would, however, also be perplexing to see that type of ‘realness’ celebrated, or to have such darkness described as ‘I wouldn’t have it any other way’. That statement sounds less like you’re concerned with broader human honesty and more like you’re just ok with the message in this particular song because you’re desensitised to misogyny.

Nah, I think you're just reading what you want in to my comment. I decried the attitudes as abusive because they are. Good for John for disavowing the song, shows some personal growth.

I’m reading what’s there to be read. Not trying to misrepresent you, yet ‘decried the attitudes as abusive’ is far from what you did. My original comment provides reasoning but you can’t force a horse to drink. Where we can agree is regarding John’s personal growth. Peace.

People freaking out about the lyrics in this song should know that Lennon himself has said it was him being a fake "tough guy", and he himself laughed at how misogynistic it is...

If the lyrics were different, it would be a whole different story. This would've been a huge hit!

Yeah, this doesn't "hit me right in the feels." Hope I don't know anyone to whom that applies.
