This song is so cool in it's rejection of the past, and the 60s hangover into the late 70s. Joe makes the point that these bands were no longer relevant because punk was ripping it up and starting again. It's just ironic that Mick's general guitar playing is reminiscent of Keith's (another wonderful Clash hypocrisy!) Don't get me wrong, love the song and all three bands :)

Druid66, what wish? I think Joes just making a point that in '77 punk had kind of taken other, and in that year there was no Stones, Elvis or Beatles. And afterall, The Clash are the only band that mattered ;)
