Others would get a double concept album out of this, or a 500-page novel, or a six-hour TV mini-series. Neil boils it all down into an exquisite five-minute pop song. Musical storytelling at its finest.

Every time I listen to this I'm like "this is the best song ever, can't get better than this". goes without saying I feel the same about dozens of other songs! in the end it belongs to that elite group of the greatest songs ever written. DIVINE.

Strangely, every single time I hear the "You wouldn't think that I was fifty three"/And he'd say,"no, you couldn't be!" part I really want to know what she looks like.

Yeah, the way I interpreted the lyrics was that she was becoming deluded/desperate in old age after a life that started out well but slowly began going to pot. Then again, I may not be right, that's just what I got from it. Absolutely love this song - one of, if not my favourite Divine Comedy song.

The harmonies on this (listen closely!) are beautiful. Just another facet to this fine wine that simply continues to reveal more and more layers.

I have been wondering about that myself. My guess is that she becomes more desperate, and starts lying... What do you think?
