I have a slightly complicated relationship with this album. I first heard it as the double disc edition, having access to both the original album version and the EROC demos. I kinda like the versions and overall sound of the EROC demos more, but I like Anneke's vocals better on the official album. Yet I find the production underwhelming on both versions. The EROC demos are too rough whilst the album mix itself is kind of dull and sounds anonymous in character. Overall it's not as strong musically as Mandylion either. I really like the music on here but I wish there was another mix landing somewhere in between the album and EROC sessions respectively. The fact that the production sounds more or less exactly like Mandylion robs it of its true identity IMO. Still my second fave though.

Relistening to this and Mandylion over the past few weeks, I'm not so sure I prefer the latter anymore. When I first got into The Gathering in 2012 I definitely gave Mandylion the upper hand, but I might actually prefer this album nowadays. Still, they are more or less musically tied for me.

Their last metal album. Definitely more rock influenced, than Mandylion and much worse, than flawless predecessor - The Earth Is My Witness and New Moon, Different Day despite fantastic vocal performance by Anneke drag as hell and Shrink sounds like musical quotation of teenage girl diary (naive and stupid). But on the other title track, Confusion, The May Song or Kevin's Telescope are on level comparable to previous record and seriously kick ass, so it's not a masterpiece, but solid atmospheric doom metal release with alt. rock influences.

I'd say this is my favorite album by The Gathering. You can hear the alt-rock influence creeping in, but there's still plenty of metal to be found. Makes for a mix of sounds that was, at the time, quite unique.

Underrated album. I love Nighttime Birds & On Most Surfaces most but every track is good :)

A fine album which can be summed up as a brighter, slightly more extroverted but less mysterious version of Mandylion.

I think I prefer the alternative / demo versions of "On Most Surfaces" and "New Moon, Different Day". Great album anyway!

I guess this is one of the few albums, whose ending is actually better than it's beginning. My two favourite songs on this are actually the two last...

Some albums are way to low in the charts cuz of mistagging. It's [album artist=The Gathering]How To Measure A Planet? (disc 1)[/album] * [album artist=The Gathering]How To Measure A Planet (disc 2)[/album] * [album artist=The Gathering]if_then_else[/album] * [album artist=The Gathering]Always...[/album] * [album artist=The Gathering]Sleepy Buildings - A Semi Acoustic Evening[/album] * [album artist=The Gathering]A Noise Severe (disc 1)[/album] * [album artist=The Gathering]A Noise Severe (disc 2)[/album]. Some others might be up for discussion (Accessories, Downfall). But get those others higher up the charts! ;-) namasté
