one year later, and holocene is still just as poignant and captivating, if not even more so than it was upon first listen; it's a gift that keeps on giving! it perfectly encapsulates the condition of the human collective conscience in the 2020s, and with every listen it bears new fruits.

Crazy to think these guys used to write riffs that could reduce whole buildings to rubble but now they just write gay little ballads to put your kids to sleep at night.

'Holocene' proves the genious of Robin Staps and the whole band. The Ocean really is a genius band. The Ocean is always trying out something new. One thing that sets them apart from many other bands is the fact that they have never made a bad album. Their earlier stuff is excellent. Even though they are very different from this release. Take 'Precambrian' for example. A truly genius album. Or Antropocentric/Heliocentric. Truly amazing releases. I just saw them live a week ago and the concert was just incredible! Loic Rosetti is amazing live!

Their show last month at Ramfest in Cape Town was immense. Holocene hasn't fully matched up to Phanerozoic II for me, but that would be a ridiculous expectation as that album is godlike

The Ocean's music perfectly captures how magnificently terrifying nature can really be

The Ocean does Darkwave. I'm into it. Don't love it as much as their older work, but it's definitely got their DNA all over it.

That's exactly why I've been enjoying it so much. "Holocene" is their first album I'm able to listen from start to finish. I just couldn't stand the wee bit too much screaming of their previous albums, but this one I think they're letting the clean vocals breathe a little bit more. I don't know how old time fans feel about this, but I hope this is the direction the band will be taking in the future.

You know that there is a instrumental version of every album since Heliocentric? Might be worth giving those a shot if you don't like the screaming but want to listen the music overall. :)

I appreciate the suggestion, but I'd rather have the vocals a bit toned down than no vocals at all.

@THEKILLINGSPREE: The Ocean isnt for you. Go back to your Regina Spektor and your other vaginal music

So the new one is influenced by NiN instead of Tool. And it still sounds like The Ocean, 100%. Great new album, these people never disappoint.

A little softer than I would like, but I like how they build the songs on top of the synth stems. I think it'll end up being more of a grower, it's not as immediate as the Phanerozoic albums were.

I have to say that despite Oligocene and Holocene being the coolest surprises on Phanerozoic II, I think the new album's just a tad too inconsistent and same-y, plus I really dislike how Loic fits into the sound. When I heard that Holocene will be the big synthesizer album I got unreasonably hyped, being a fan of synths, the ocean progressive metal in general as well as said titletrack for the new album but as it is I can't help but be a bit disappointed. Still looking forward to getting my hands on the instrumental version and the SHRVL album, maybe it'll click better then. Slightly better than Heliocentric, if I had to rank them.

I think what The Ocean has done with these 3 recent albums is an amazing and natural development of their sound. Don't get me wrong, I do love "Pelagial" and "Heliocentric" and the other albums they have done, but feel like I still want something fresh and "newer" sound, which they have made a fantastic job with these recent albums.

okay, holocene blew away my expectations well and truly. i figured it would be a "greater than the sum of its parts" album, that i shouldn't judge an album by its singles, and that hunch has more than held up under the scrutiny of a full playthrough. this has the ocean's dna written all over it, with enough of an experimental edge to it which gives it its own character. rather fitting of a sound considering it reflects upon the rise of humanity as a technological civilization in the holocene epoch. all in all an album which at the very least matches its predecessors, i couldn't have asked for a better final installment to the geological tetralogy. i give it an 8.5/10, and i can only see it growing upon me with subsequent listens.

It is tough to say bad album - it is certainly different but that is also a bit refreshing. It has grown with me with each listen and certainly has some excellent songs. The first time in the history of The Ocean that someone else has come up with the basis for the songs. I would urge to resist a quick judgement but if you only enjoy the later metallic Ocean style then you probably won't enjoy this. I still say not bad - but different.

I didn't quite like most songs on Heliocentric, but Anthropocentric is pretty good and the concept/yrics of both albums are sweet!

The kind of music that makes you question your existence, makes you wonder and ponder on your basic instincts, ultimately leading to the final conclusion, death waits us all, but everything turns around. The kind of music that every note, beat is masterfully crafted to express our deepest thoughts and fears. A true force of nature, these guys are.

It was great seeing them live again, even if it was 12 years later. A better venue really let their sound shine.
