Telephone was originally released on October 11, 2019 as one of the songs off of FANDOM, the band's third studio album. An energetic pop rock track, it was written about a girl lead vocalist Awsten Knight saw at Target, where instead of approaching her, he decided to a write a song about her. The existence of Telephone was teased in a tweet by Knight all the way back in the January of 2018, before being confirmed that the song was Telephone in a separate tweet when the album was released.

Originally a deep cut off the album, the song gained traction due to being featured in the popular Netflix show Heartstopper, based off the webcomic of the same name. It is now one of the band's most popular songs.
