“t r a n s p a r e n t s o u l” is the first track off of WILLOW’s fourth studio album "lately I feel EVERYTHING", but was released as a single on April 27, 2021. The title is stylized in a very unique way, with spaces in between all the letters. The pop-punk track features iconic alternative rock band Blink-182’s drummer, Travis Barker. When speaking to Rolling Stone, WILLOW explained that the track was inspired by a quote from Hindu guru Radhanath Swami. The song’s unique style was influenced by the likes of Avril Lavigne, Paramore, and Fall Out Boy as well as her own mother’s nu-metal band Wicked Wisdom.
"I am so grateful for this tune because it was created in such an introspective time . It was the song that proved to me that I needed to let go of the insecurities I had about making a project of this genre." - via Complex
When speaking to Rolling Stone, WILLOW said that the title was inspired by a quote from Hindu guru Radhanath Swami:
"It is said that a saintly person is so pure that he or she acts like a mirror. When we come in the presence of a mirror-like soul, we can see both the beauty and ugliness of of our inner life."
WILLOW told Barker in an October 2021 conversation for Rolling Stone:
"I didn’t even think for a second that you were going to be on ’t r a n s p a r e n t s o u l.‘ That was kind of like a far-fetched fever dream for me. When I actually got in contact with you, I was so honored by the fact that you were even interested. What about ’t r a n s p a r e n t s o u l’ inspired you enough to get on it at all?"
Barker answered:
"I was so impressed. I was like, ‘This is what she should have been doing all along, because it sounds so natural.’ It sounds like who you are, every time I’ve met you or I’ve been around you. Then, when I got into the studio and added some stuff to it, had an idea for a bridge or whatever, it turned out to be a song I was really proud of."
