At the time of its release, Paul explained that “Jet” was inspired by a black Labrador puppy he owned, though in recent years he has started claiming it is about a horse or pony.
Regardless, the lyrics are barely relevant to either animal, with Paul conceding that many of the lyrics were little more than nonsense:
"I make up so much stuff. It means something to me when I do it, and it mean’s something to the record buyer, but if I’m asked to analyze it I can’t really explain what it is. ‘Suffragette’ was crazy enough to work. It sounded silly, so I liked it."
Given the references to Majors and suffragettes, some have speculated that this song is McCartney’s tribute to David Bowie. Paul has never said as much, so it’s probably just a coincidence. Although an interesting note is that Tony Visconti, Bowie’s longtime producer and collaborator, did the orchestration on this song/album.
