The poppy, bright sound of “I Love You, Will You Marry Me” is at strict odds with the lyrics. The song is based on an incident involving a piece of grafitti on a skybridge in the Park Hill council estate in Sheffield, neighbouring Dominic’s hometown of Doncaster. The romantic gesture – a man spray-painting “I LOVE YOU WILL U MARRY ME” on the bridge – was co-opted by brands, celebrities, and others. However, the story actually ended up becoming incredibly tragic, as the man in question became homeless, and the woman died only a few years after the gesture.
Throughout this song, YUNGBLUD explores how easily-exploitable actions are often commodified, while the people behind the action are left on their own.
The title is a reference to a piece of grafitti on a skybridge in the Park Hill council estate in Sheffield, neighbouring Dominic’s hometown of Doncaster. Noted for being in both a state of disrepair and a grade II listed building.
