The commercial way of calling Post-Punk, so as not to scare the general public or corporations lol. Too Pop to be Punk, but not polished enough to be Pop

I listen to new wave and I'm not a sissy homosexual, in fact I'm a very macho homosexual.

Too bad that all these bands - each for itself - only fit in one drawer. By reading this shoutbox I start to believe that New Wave is an illusion, because "this isn't New Wave" and "they are not New Wave" and "these guys weren't even born when New Wave was dead again".

The Cure have at least 3 albums you could consider new wave (4 if you count japanese whispers which has most of their pop hits), But Joy Division and Bauhaus are post punk and the Smiths are indie pop

New Wave and Post Punk are pretty interchangeable tbh. They’re both just the evolution of Punk music.

This is true… just ask anyone who was into this stuff in the 80s and they will confirm that it was all "(New) Wave" music. No one but a few music journo's used the term "Post-Punk" in the 80s, it was actually a pretty obscure term. No idea when people started to differentiate the poppier stuff from the "serious, artsy" stuff, but I think it can be traced down to Simon Reynolds, who popularized the Post-Punk label in the 90s/00s and made that division in his book "Rip it up and start again".

Can't say I agree. Everything I've heard of synthwave has sounded incredibly shallow, and there are like 15 artists just redoing the same three tracks from Escape from New York and Blade Runner over and over. The Blade Runner soundtrack on its own was a way more diverse album than that entire genre, not to mention the new wave genre. There are still synth heavy post-punk groups like Echo West, Hante. and Schonwald around though.

You heard wrong side of synthwave then.. The Midnight, Perturbator, Dynatron, Miami Nights 1984, Carpenter Brut, Gost, FM-84. Good examples of diversified and not-doing-same-thing synthwave, just to name a few. I agree some projects sound repetitive, but that's quite obvious thing for any new genre, so don't give up early!

Don't know if it's greatest movement, but surely it's the most emotional genre in music. Bands like The Cars, Talk Talk, Alphaville or Duran Duran, even The Cure (which is also post-punk) gives me unbelievable amount of emotions, not comparable to any other genre. And I listen so many genres.

Maybe it's a regional thing, but in Germany for example new wave and post-punk were interchangeable terms. In fact no one used "post-punk" in these regions in the 80s, it was all "wave" music, regardless if it was upbeat punk-influenced pop, synth pop, goth or darkwave. Maybe the distinction was already present in the 80s UK, I don't know and you have to enlighten me about it. But I personally feel the division between new wave and post-punk is a product of the 90s. (especially when keeping in mind, that McLaren originally created the term new wave to refer to punk music, so it is essentially the same thing - not comparable to the issue with industrial being applied to totally strange genres)
