Artists that are followers of the Bobo Shanti mansion of Rastafari - founded by Prince Emanuel Charles Edwards in the 1950s.
Bobos are identifiable by their long, flowing robes, tightly wound turbans and the symbolic brooms they make and carry. Bobos follow a highly ascetic life-style based on a strict adherence to Mosaic law and a fierce belief in the inherent dignity (and supremacy) of the black peoples of the world.
Notable performers: Anthony B, Capleton and Sizzla.
In keeping with their beliefs, Bobo performers have a tendency to take on the role of Old Testament prophets, calling down fire upon Babylon in all its manifestations. Although their music is clearly rooted in contemporary dancehall/ragga styles, their ultra-conservative sensibility sets them in opposition to many western, liberal conceptions of gender and sexuality.
