Wiki

Detroit trap is a Hip Hop subgenre originating from the Michigan city of Detroit. The genre, which began to emerge in during the early 2010s, gained early local attention after Doughboyz Cashout (also referred to as DBCH) and producer Helluva began using upbeat Trap-derived production and dynamic flows. Eventually, later artists and producers, who were inpsired by the DBCH movement, began mixing these influences with more recent 2010s rap music trends.

Detroit trap's unique style of production often follows 808 drum patterns, averaging at 90-110 BPM, with deep basslines. Melodies are comprised of mallet sounds and piano keys, taking influence from Bay Area hip hop's laidback, funky grooves. The style of rap is characterized by the frequent inclusion of punchlines, repetitive rhyming and flows which have fast deliveries that can be slightly off-beat at times. Detroit trap uses themes that can borrow from Gangsta Rap's topics of gang activity, crime and drug use. This form of rap music would later achieve national attention within the United States during the late 2010s, with defining hits including 2016's "First Day Out" by Tee Grizzley and Sada Baby's "Bloxk Party", released in 2018.

Detroit trap also became a centerpoint for "scam rappers" such as Teejayx6, whose recurring themes of cyber-crime, banking frauds and scamming gathered quick underground attention from online publications. The trio ShittyBoyz would become another player in this scene, developing a unique form of Detroit trap centered around samples and rhythms from 1980s Electro and Freestyle music. The neighboring city of Flint in Michigan also developed its own kind of Detroit trap, with Enrgy Beats becoming a major producer alongside famed rappers like Rio da Yung OG and YN Jay.
