old school rap is just as dumb as a term as classic rock to discern the style of music being played.

That's pretty dumb to tag a group called "Leaders of the New School" old school.

Damn character limit!!! LOL I have to disagree with anyone who thinks hip-hop from the 80’s is old school. All the stuff at that time was ground breaking to hip-hop music. Rakim changed every real M.C. who came after him, he totally changed the pace of rhymes listen to GMF& the FF. then fast forward to the mid 80’s and listen to the Fat Boys, Run DMC, the Beastie Boys, LL Cool J, Kool Moe D., The treacherous 3, Then listen to paid in full and any track after Jay-Z, Mos Def, or even J. Cole the pace and rhythm of the rhyme is patterned after Rakim. Then when someone used another’s Rhymes or style of dress it was called biting which was a true sign of a horrible “rapper”. Getting off track oops just see that *ish soo much…uuurrrggghh The mid 80’s was more like the golden age of Hip-Hop. Old School is where it all started in the late 70’s. Redefining what old school is every few years just because some kid started listening to it at a different time than everyone else is stupid.

Just stubbled on to this “disquisition” and first I’m 38 and ManDirky hit this convo on the head I’ve noticed in the past few years people calling anything older than when they started getin some ass old school…. LOL Nah that’s not how it works Old School hip-hop began in like 77’ and ended around 83’ish… I wont say a specific song such as any Run-DMC track cause the group it self at the time was “New School” the way they yelled in the mic and not only got your attention but got in your face through your speakers and forced you to listen, not only what they were wearing, and saying but the heavy guitar cords they chose to sample and use for scratch patterns at the time they were “gangster” per say LOL GMF and the Furious Five, Sugar Hill Gang, were old school. When people call Biggie or 2Pac old school personally I think thats fucked up simply because I graduated HS in 1990, and I don’t consider myself old so the music I listened to when I started gettin some ass couldn’t be old!!!

I really dig your opinion. But yes, I know more oldschool-artists than 3 or 4 names... and I respect you (Rutajlo) for being into hiphop since I am 5 years old. So you had the chance to catch more impressions so far. Of course, you even find some oldschool-styles today like every style from musical-history is coming back from time to time. And like I wrote, everyone has an own definition of oldschool. I am only a little confused when people see some early 90s hiphop like Brand Nubian or even mid-90s stuff like Biggie and call that oldschool. But this discussion shows that some people (like you) are really into hiphop and that's great.

Ok ManDirky. U R 100% right if its come to beginning, all u write is correct. Our argue is because in Ur definition Old School is "beggining" -- and U right. My definition of this word is little wider. For me Old School is not only "beginning " but also a style in hip hop. So U R completly right, but there was a lot of artist till late 80's, who's style U could call old school like Biz Markie, N.W.A and many more. And even today u can find (Ugly Duckies) and they play old school style. So , sorry again U R the Man Peace .

I' m sorry but "old school" is not a definition of WHEN SMTHG BEGUN-- I think genesis is the word U looking for. I can agree that old school end somewhere in middle 80 , i said somewhere because I THINK there is no straight date.I can agree whith the names of ppl u give but: Kool Herc , Grandmaster Flash R ppl who start all hip hop genre (i think u forgot or UR wiki missed AFRIKA BAMBATA) but EVEN kids know this if they read. I'm listening to the hip hop for 17 years now ( i think u was 5 then ) and if U want I can give u if u want at least 30 names of old school artist. Yours 3 or 4 names just start all the history , but they r not only ones. Peace.

"Oldschool" is the definition of WHEN SOMETHING BEGUN. please check it, please my friends. look at wikipedia, watch "Wildstyle". Abbott & Rutajlo from Poland. You still can DO something in an oldschool-way, you can act "oldschool" today. But you can't say this whole time lasted 10 years or more. you confuse two things. 1. a time 2. a style. Abbott, yes if you talk about style, you're a lil bit right about cypress hill. but if you see it from a chronological view, old school died with Run-DMC. Now continue. thanks.

Lol, please don't get mad, kid. Old school is when rap was created in the 70s. Did you ever listened to Kurtis Blow, Grandmaster Flash, Cold Crush Brothers or Funky 4 +1??? The movie "Wildstyle" from 1982??? Rap originated from 70s funk. You could find this vintage oldschool-style in general until 1983/1984. Then, more synthetic and "colder" beats came up. "It's like that" (1983) by Run-D.M.C. had this new style, away from the disco sound. Now, If I destroyed your view of the world, you can continue with it if you visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_school_hip_hop . YOU better learn and "listen, listen, listen". Don't forget: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_school_hip_hop
