Plugg is a subgenre of Trap that emerged in the mid-2010s, pioneered by producer MexikoDro and members of his group BeatPluggz, who were influenced by the more minimalistic production of trap pioneer Zaytoven. The relaxed sound is defined by its common use of sparse and minimalistic drum and hi hat patterns, subby 808s and heavy low end, piano samples, airy pads, and icy synths. Productions almost exclusively use claps on third beats, while snares are reduced to only being on half beats. Songs are commonly lower-tempo between 130 and 145 BPM, although producers have made tracks outside this tempo range. Abundant producer tags are another common element of the style, most notably the iconic "Plug!" tag used by BeatPluggz members. Producers have also very frequently combined the production techniques of the genre with Cloud Rap. MexikoDro remains the style's most well known and influential producer, producing tracks for many SoundCloud rappers, most notably his frequent work with Playboi Carti.
The most common types of vocals on tracks range from standard trap rapping, to melodic Pop Rap, to singing with some rapping, which artists in the latter style and their fans have dubbed "PluggnB". The style has also grown beyond BeatPluggz's circle, with many producers such as Chinatown, DJ Young Kash, and CashCache adopting the style, and even collaborating with the group's members. PluggnB producers, such as XanGang and Goyxrd, have also taken the genre's production styles into a more energetic and higher-tempo direction, with bouncier melodies, static hi hat patterns, and more liberal use of snares.
