Tribal ambient combines the atmosphere of ambient music with the sound of traditional instruments, especially percussion. Vocals are used sparingly and often lend a spiritual feeling to the music. Steve Roach is sometimes mentioned as an originator of the genre. Other notable artists are Vidna Obmana, Robert Rich, Ulf Söderberg and Antonio Testa.
